Nigel was born in Liverpool in 1950 and spent his working life in Health and Social Care. He retired in 2010 and established Creation Fine Arts Gallery in Beverley working with 250 painters, printmakers, photographers, ceramicists, jewellery makers and sculptors. He closed the gallery in 2015 to concentrate on photography.

Photography positions and publications

Walker has been the official photographer for Beverley Puppet Festival (one of the largest in Europe) in 2016 and 2018 ; for Stage 4 Beverley (East Riding Theatre festival) in 2017, 2018 and 2019 and also for the Fire and Ice Ultra Marathon in Iceland in 2019.

He acted as photographer for the exhibition “Golden Values” which was a series of jewellery works by makers Oresome through the lost wax method as taught by sculptor Jacqueline Steiger during 2020 and 21.

In addition he has published a number of monographs, some to accompany exhibitions and some on topics that interest him. Most recently he worked closely with the 400 year old restored Le Jardin Secret in Marrakech to make "From Water Every Living Thing", a photoessay on Islamic garden design. These can be seen here.

In April 2022 “Where Are You A Local”, an international collaborative photobook featuring nine photographers, was published by SilverGrass Press.  One of his photographs is the cover of Joanne Huntsman’s “Energy Medicine Symbols” pub in July 2022 and more recently several of his pictures have been used  as album covers by Simon-Mary Vincent for new releases of electronic compositions.

 

Most recently he has engaged as curator of "Horizons (over which we may choose to disappear)" at Brynmor Jones Library in the University of Hull. This show highlighted work by ten internationally active photographs on the theme of sustainablity. You can find details of the exhibition and its installation on the Blog page of this website.

 

The Events page on this site will usually contain further information relating to individual exhibitions, talks or courses including his Safe Space peer support group and the opportunity to become a part of the 500 Faces Community during 2026/27.

Other photographic experience and current work.

 Walker usually undertakes half a dozen talks each year on aspects of photography at photographic clubs in the Yorkshire area and adjudicates competitions within clubs. He runs occasional  half day practical sessions on “Slow Photography” as a contribution to mindfulness and mental health. In 2020 he founded The People Collective, a not-for-profit community collaborative which invites a small number of local photographers to work on a single topic. The first - "HUman Impact", recorded people's experience of lockdowns in the twenty HU postcode areas, while the second, "Fish!!" looked at how people dealt with the end of the fishing industry in Hull during the 1970's. 2024 saw the group recording a year in the life of Beverley Racecourse which will showed, initially at the race course in February 2025, in Hull during October 2025 and then opens at Beverley Treasure House on 14th February 2026 where it remains until May of that year.

Within 22026 he intends completing a sequence of photographs based on interviews with older men called “View from the Hill” looking at how men are valued once retired.

He was a Trustee of St Hugh’s Foundation for the Arts  for seven years until November 2023 and member of the Steering Group for We Are Creative, a recently formed group in the Hull and East Riding area as well as a member of Redeye Photographic Network. and hosted Hothouse in Hull in November 2023.
