The People Collective 2024

July 16, 2024

Since founding this photographic collective four years ago I'm pleased that we have achieved two major shows "HUman Impact" which showed portraits of people in HU post code areas surviving the pandemic and "Fish!!". This last told the story of the 1970's in the Hull fishing industry as it sank into decline. Again, it was the voices of those involved, from the trawlers, factories, dockside and families, that made it a significant and telling show.

In 2024 those photographers involved are working hard to tell a different story. This year we are working towards recording a year in the life of Beverley Racecourse. The racecourse is an important focal point of Beverley and draws many thousands of people each year to watch the racing. This promotes the town, attracting visitors from all over the North and provides employment for the many people who support the course. From the permanent staff of just nine to the many contracted staff who organise security, parking, catering, first aid, cleaning and veterinary services among the many.

The Collective will show their finished work (well, at least some of it) during April 2025 at the course and later at other venues so look out for announcements. Not only will it contain prints but other electronic presentations will help us to cover the story more broadly too. It is also our intention to have a book available for anyone interested. It means that in September we'll be busy looking at all the shots we have to decide which ones hit the mark and tell the ongoing story of this remarkable feature of Beverley.

The photographs on this page are mine. They do not include any by other photographers working on the project.
