Florence Henri - Pariser Fenster

Collectors Ann Tenenbaum and her husband Thomas H Lee are American citizens who have bought photographic prints they like since the 1990's. To celebrate the Metropolitan Museum of New York's 150th anniversary in 2020 they donated fifty nine prints and three print macquettes from their collection, a generous and important gift. As a result the Met mounted an exhibition of their collection which shows a remarkable history of photography through the last century.

Paul Strand - From the Viaduct

The exhibition includes prints by Paul Strand, Dora Maar, Man Ray, Walker Evans, Diane Arbus and Cindy Sherman to name but a few. As Max Hollein, Director of the Met, writes in his forward to the exhibition in the accompanying book (which you can preview online here) "Early on, Ann recognised the camera as one of the most creative and democratic instruments of contemporary human expression." Starting in the 1990's Tenenbaum and Lee bought 20th century prints almost exclusively. Jeff L Rosenheim, the curator, notes in his introduction that the collection is also especially rich in works by women photographers.

The show both opened and closed in March 2020 due to the pandemic. Luckily there are some online resources which share this exhibition with us all. I have left a link to the catalogue above which can be viewed online. There are also copies of the catalogue still for sale and the cheapest I found was on Amazon for £24.00.
